We seek to welcome the stranger and offer hospitality – but do we understand, parish by parish, who our “strangers” really are and how, despite our best intentions, we can end up excluding them, institutionally, liturgically, or musically? Using her recent book Radical Welcome: Embracing God, the Other, and the Spirit of Transformation, the Rev. Stephanie Spellers, Cox Fellow and Minister for Radical Welcome at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Boston, will guide us through a morning of self-reflection and self-discovery in radically welcoming others into the church. In the afternoon, Patrick Evans, Associate Professor in the Practice of Sacred Music at the Institute of Sacred Music at Yale Divinity School, will talk about the musical boundaries that force worshipers into a passive mode and will lead us in practical music-making with repertoire that loosens up those boundaries. Both individuals and groups are encouraged to attend the conference; breakout sessions will allow parish teams to immediately apply new ideas to their current parish settings. The Rev. Spellers will also preach at Christ Church Sunday morning, April 6.
"Meet" Stephanie through this video at a recent interview and booksigning at Catalyst Books in New York City.
