Christ Church Serves

Christ Church serves our neighbors in many ways throughout the year, from our monthly shelter meals at Old First Reformed Church to our ongoing food and supply drives for local organizations from Philabundance to Cradles to Crayons.  This year, we are sending teams of volunteers out to be a "flash mob for good" on MLK Day:

Martin Luther King Jr Day, 2014

On Monday, January 20th, volunteers from Christ Church will offer service in three locations around greater Philadelphia:

The Saint James School (SJS) is a tuition-free Episcopal middle school serving one of the most under-resourced neighborhoods in North Philadelphia.  SJS is sponsored by the Diocese of Pennsylvania and supported by many Christ Church parishioners.

Volunteers will join in a worship service in historic St. James the Less church at 9:30am, work on various volutneer projects around the school from 10am-1pm, and have the option to stay for lunch at 1pm.  SJS is happy to welcome kids middle school-aged or older and can accomodate up to 15 Christ Church volunteers.

St James is located at 3217 W Clearfield St, Philadelphia, PA 19132,  Carpooling is available from Christ Church! Sign up to volunteer at St James HERE.

The Neighborhood Center of Camden (NCIC) serves the Kaighns Avenue neighborhood of Camden, NJ, providing everything from after school programs to hot meals and a "flash grocery store" to equip Camden families with toys and food for the holidays.  Christ Church vestry member Mike Landis heads the Neighborhood Center, and Christ Church volunteers are active in many of its programs.

On MLK Day, volunteers will be cleaning and painting nursery and adult classrooms, and (weather permitting!) helping in the Center's garden and outdoor facilities.  Participants will also be invited to a "Day of Witness" program to share and reflect on their service.  Volunteering will start at 9am and be finished around noon.  NCIC is happy to welcome families of all ages and can accomodate as many Christ Church folks as want to help out!

The Center is located at 278 Kaighns Ave, Camden, NJ 08103.  Carpooling will be available from Christ Church! Sign up to help at the Neighborhood Center HERE

The Charter High School of Architecture and Design (CHAD) is located on 7th and Sansom streets in Center City.  Headed by parishioner Peter Kountz, and staffed by many Christ Church members as employees and volunteers, CHAD provides a safe space, quality high school education and college prep to Philadelphia public school students.

On MLK Day, volunteers will work with a team of CHAD students to help paint the school's third floor classrooms and hallways, starting at 9am and finishing in the ealry afternoon.  CHAD is happy to have youth in grades 8 and above particpate and can accomodate up to 9 folks from Christ Church.

CHAD is located at 7th and Sansom streets and is easily accessible via public transit. Sign up to volunteer at CHAD HERE.
The Christ Church Preservation Trust is a non-religious non-profit organization whose goal is the preservation of the historic Christ Church buildings and burial ground, and the interpretation of church history.
