Christ Church Tourism Program Selects Theme for 2010

11/30/2009
Each year, the Christ Church Tourism Program selects a theme through which we tell the stories of Christ Church. In 2010, our theme will be Patriots and Heroes. The tours at the church and the burial ground will feature stories about miltary heroes and patriots with a connection to Christ Church and Christ Church Burial Ground.

The church tours will emphasize the military contributions of men like Benjamin Franklin and the Associators; Brigadier General John Forbes and Fort DuQuesne; and Revolutionary heroes Anthony Wayne, Hugh Mercer, John Barry, and Richard Dale.  The tour will also include some of the tragic stories of the Civil War as seen through the eyes of Christ Church members.

The Christ Church Burial Ground is the final resting place of over 4000 people including Benjamin Franklin and four other signers of the Declaration of Independence, prominent physicians and military heroes from the Revolutionary War and Civil War. Probably no other nonmilitary cemetery in the country contains as large a number of colonial and revolutionary leaders. The burial ground tour will focus on Joseph Hewes, the first Secretary of the US Navy and a signer of the Declaration of Independence; Commodore William Bainbridge, the commander of Old Ironsides; General Jacob Morgan who fought in the battles of Monmouth and Princeton during the Revolutionary War; Civil War Generals George Cadwalder and McCall; and Doctor Benjamin Rush, the Surgeon General for the Continental Army and a Signer of the Declaration of Independence.

The tours are scheduled to begin in March, 2010 but with advanced notice, our guide staff can give a preview tour and share some of the stories we plan to include.

We encourage those with an interest in the military, military groups, and military reunions to contact us to reserve a tour. Please email Anne McLaughlin at amclaughlin@christchurchphila.org or call at 215-922-1695 x32.

Whoever you are, and wherever you find yourself on the journey of faith, you are welcome to come as you are and receive the riches of God’s blessings.
