The Christ Church Community Update
For Sunday, February 28, 2010
Whoever you are, and wherever you find yourself on the journey of faith, you are welcome at Christ Church, as you are, to receive the blessings of God so freely given.

Greetings!

For my Lenten discipline, I "gave up" shoveling snow.  Alas, I now must find a new sacrifice.

We now approach the Second Sunday of Lent, and you may feel Lent is passing you by.  Rarely do we find folks who commit to a serious Lenten discipline of daily prayer, but using the devotion on page 137 of your Book of Common Prayer, either in morning or evening, takes just a moment (an online edition here, or purchase in the Tower Room, or borrow one from me on Sunday).

I am not a big believer in "giving something up" just to forsake a regular pleasure that you intend to return to.  However, I do see benefit in a discipline such as this:  one day a week, say a Wednesday or Friday, forgo Dunkin Donuts, expensive coffee drinks, fast food, and the like, and then for dinner, serve yourself a simple bowl of plain rice and cooked beans.  Reflect on the truth that most of the world, especially our brothers and sisters in Haiti, does not eat even that much in the course of a day.  This is not a fast of self denial, but a fast of solidarity with those who would happily live on the crumbs that fall from most of our tables.

To take it a step further, calculate the money you didn't spend that day on food.  You may wish to send the savings to the Haiti Fund at Episcopal Relief and Development, or to Philabundance, or offer it on Sundays to the Discretionary Fund (see below).

All of fasting of Lent is preparation for the feast of Easter, this year on Sunday April 4. The schedule for Holy Week and Easter is found here.

This Sunday at Christ Church--February 28

9 AM--The Holy Eucharist and Penitential Order, hymns and sermon
10:10--The Rector's Forum--Lenten Study
11 AM--The Holy Eucharist and Penitential Order, with the choir, hymns and sermon

MINISTRY SEASON: HIGHLIGHTED MINISTRIES FOR SUNDAY

CHRIST CHURCH NEEDS YOU!

Volunteering at Christ Church is much more than giving your time to help the Church, a ministry, or an outreach program.  By giving your time and talents, you will build relationships with others and strengthen your spiritual life.  Christ Church is currently seeking volunteers and participants for...

Lectors: Members of the parish are invited to read scripture lessons and to lead prayers of the people at Sunday and Wednesday Services. For the 9:00 Services, contact: Ruth Haines at ruth.haines.ctr@dla.mil. For the 11:00 Services, contact Enny Cramer at ennycramer@aol.com.

Rescheduled for March 7--Baroque Concert at Christ Church Sunday Afternoon, 5 PM

Old City Music Baroque Ensemble is presenting their debut concert, "Inspired Bach!" Sunday, March 7 at  5 PM.  The exciting program will explore some well-known pieces and musicians that have inspired J.S. Bach, and whose works and lives he in turn has inspired.  Admission is free and donations are very welcome.

What is the "Rector's Discretionary Fund?"

The Discretionary Fund, administered by the clergy, goes to help people in our midst who need direct and immediate help.  Currently, the fund is being asked to help with a security deposit for a displaced family, food, medicine and the like.  Loans are made from the fund, as are direct gifts.  The Fund is also used to help agencies known to the clergy as being effective with the poor and disadvantaged.  Designated gifts to the fund may be made on Sunday or through the mail, or through secure online giving (registration required).

Keep up your contributions and pledges online

All of the snow has dampened both attendance and offerings at Christ Church, and cash flow for the operating budget is low.  If you have fallen behind on contributions, please consider catching up online.  Our new secure site for Christ Church allows you to make a one-time gift, or to set up regular recurring gifts for your pledge.

Registration is required, but works like all similar sites.  For further instruction, or to make a financial commitment for 2010, please visit our Stewardship webpage.
